I am also happy to introduce a new piece of work, inspired by The Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, Australia.

“Lotus” (mixed media | canvas | 48×48″)

My latest paintings are about the beautiful water lotus flowers that I saw in January of this year while visiting “ The Royal Botanical Gardens” in Melbourne, Australia. It was summer in that part of the world and the perfect conditions for water lotus. They need all day sun and heat to thrive. The blossoms of course are the star of the show balancing on the tall, skinny stems that can reach up to 6ft while the flower itself can bloom to a width of 12 inches. They love the the muddy soil found in the lake to create their striking leaves and flowers.

Because the pristine flowers emerge from these murky waters they are viewed as a symbol of purity and beauty in the religions of Buddhism and Hinduism. Through my paintings I wanted to capture the many shades of green the leaves contained as the sunlight filtered down through the dense foliage and the beautiful reflection they produced in the water.

The flowers and stems swayed with the breeze as we glided by in our punt. Another first time experience for me to ride in a charming little boat called a “punt” and view these magical flowers rising from the water.
